No. 9 Squadron's Afghan Record

Shoulder patch of No. 9 SquadronSquadron leader Hamid Qadri from Squadron No. 9 succeeded in catching up with a pair which lingered just a little too long in the vicinity of Parachina on May 17th, 1986. precise details of this engagement are not available, but it appears that there is a very possibility that Qadri secured a double 'kill'. Of the two Su-22s he attacked, one eventually fell to earth some nine miles (14.5 km) inside Pakistani teritory; subsequent analysis of the wreckage revealed the presence of AIM-9l fragments in the empennage, confirming that it was indeed one of Qadri's victim. Today a fragment of this aircraft displaying an Afghan roundel stands adjacent to one of the Sargodha flight lines. The badly-damaged second Su-22 managed to regain Afghan airspace although it was apparently on fire and may well have crashed subsequently. Concensus has it that Qadri engaged this machine with gunfire, but in the absence of wreckage it really merits only a 'probable'

A piece of wreckage from an Afghan Air Force Sukhoi Su-22 commemorates the first PAF kill scored by Squadron leader Hameed QadriNo. 9 Squadron's other successful encounter came on March 30th, 1987 when Wing Commander Abdul Razzaq downed an An-26 that may have been on a 'ferret' mission to gather electronic intelligence. Unfortunately, details of the circumstances srounding this incident and the weaponry that was employed are not available.
