Jianjiji Jiaolianji-5 (Fighter training aircraft 5) or Jianjiao-5
Westernised designation: FT-5
Two-seat trainer aircraft.
PROGRAMME:
This tandem two-seat version of the J-5 (Chinese built
MiG-17) was developed at Chengdu in 1965 and flew for the first time
on 8 May 1966. In essence, it combines the tandem cockpits and forward
fuselage of the MiG-15UTI with the rest of the airframe of the J-5A
(Chinese MiG-17PF), though retaining the latter's lipped intake, the
small fairing indicating provision for a radar ranging gunsight in the
front cockpit. Other changes include use of a non-afterburning Xian
(XAE) WP5D turbojet, rated at 26.48 kN (5,952 lb st); and reduction of
the armament to a single Type 23-1 (23 mm) gun, carried in a removable
belly pack, with the barrel to the starboard side of the nosewheel
doors.
Certificated for mass production at the end of 1966, the JJ-5 is
still the standard advanced trainer of the Chinese air forces, to
which pupil pilots graduate after basic training on the NAMC CJ-6
(which see). A total of 1,061 had been built by the end of 1986.
OPERATORS:
Versions of the JJ-5 (FT-5) are in service with the
armed services of the following countries: Albania (6), China (500),
Pakistan (30), Sri Lanka (2), Sudan (2) and Tanzania (2).
