Can anyone confirm??!!! Bangladesh selling pak mig 29's and Frigate

Just read it at jang. It says that bangladesh has offered pakistan the mig 29's and their new frigate. Can anyone confirm this? it says that india is also a possible buyer but bangladesh prefers not to sell to india. It says that preliminary talks have begun between the pak delegation(which went with musharraf) and bangladesh. It also says that bangladesh has declared this new frigate surplus and wants to sell it to pakistan and it is included in the offered package with the migs.

I do recall bangladesh getting a spanking new frigate from south korea maybe?? not sure but i think it is more advanced than anything we have right now. This is an interesting development, and Pakistan has shown interest by starting prelim talks. Lets see how this plays out.

here is the news attachment.

here are the specs of the bangladeshi firgate, the are pretty decent and if we get a good deal in which we dont need to pay all of the money in hard cash i say we should take it.

THE BNS Bangabandhu is the first South Korean built frigate to enter service with the Bangladesh Navy. The ship of 2,300 tonnes is a modified version of the ones in service with the South Korean Navy. It is fitted with a Thales command and control sensor suite comprising the TACTICOS combat management system, BA-08 surveillance radar, a Variant surveillance radar, a Mirador electro-optical tracking and fire control system and a Lirod Mil-2 fire control radar. Thales sensor is supplying the Electronic Warfare suite comprising Cutlass 242 Electronic Support Measures and Scorpion jammer.

Weapons constitute one Otobreda 76/62 super rapid gun, 2 Otobreda 40/L70 compact mountings, 4 Otobreda MK-2 anti-ship missiles and 2 B515 triple torpedo tubes. The South Korean Hyundai company had supplied Bangladesh Navy with an offshore patrol vessel Madhumati in 1997.

The Bangladesh Navy also has four frigates, two belonging to the now obsolete Royal Navy Leopard class. These are the BN Abu Bakr and Al Haidar (both built in the 1950s and transferred in 1978 and 1982 respectively), a Salisbury class frigate Umar Farooq and the Chinese built Jianghu frigate Osman commissioned in 1989.

Pakistan would much rather buy 29s from ex Soviet republics and by in large numbers then to 8 from Bangladesh and the whole maintence, spares, as well as the notorious RD-33 are more then enough reasons for rejecting the offer....

Red face

I would take the above news report with a pinch of salt. I seriously doubt the Bangladeshi Navy would want to get rid of their newly inducted frigates after having spent millions in its acquisition, training of personnel, construction of support facilities etc. The only other alternative would be the older generation frigates in Bangladeshi navy service... which I doubt the PN is interested in.

As for the Migs... well what does the PAF want with 8 Migs??? If a russian origin combat aircraft is to be acquired by the PAF.. I think it would have gone with the Su27s from former Soviet states and in large quantities as Saad has mentioned. Possibly to be fulfill the deep strike role.

Jang's (and Urdu dailies in general) reporting regarding defence issues is quite patchy and frequently with a touch of sensationalism. So as Sultan has said, we should take the above news report with a pinch of salt.

Pakistan might procure a single Mig29 for analysis purposes. That is very much a possibility.

Bangladesh navy has to retire three british frigates within 2005 so BN is in the process of acquiring their replacements. The new frigate is the most advanced frigate in its class in south asia. So, it is unlikely that BN would let it go unless the govt. promises even more advanced frigate for BN.

The new frigate was commissioned 6 weeks prior to its original commissioning date at the request of the then prime minister Hasina. So, there was an alignment problem which is being taking care of by the manufacturer.

As for the MIG, I don't think Pakistan would buy MIGs from Bangladesh as, unlike BAF, PAF has no infrastructure at all to operate them.

If PAF was to aquire the Migs it wouldn't be for operating, but for other purposes such as DACT, evaluation, analysis, and other purposes.
