NEW DELHI: Is an Army officer having a batman a legacy of the British era?A parliamentary committee disapproves of it, but the government thinks it is "a service requirement".
The government has said no to stopping the prevalent practice in the Army of an officer having a jawan as batman, saying it was a service requirement and not "a colonial legacy".
The parliamentary standing committee on defence had said that the British practice of using jawans as sahayaks should be "stopped forthwith" and jawans should be treated "in a dignified manner".
Rejecting the demand, the government in its action taken report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday said the system of providing sahayaks prevailed in all armies of the world.
"It is reiterated that if officers and JCOs (junior commissioned officers) of the Army are to perform their functions as leaders, they have to be provided with protection and assistance in carrying out allotted tasks. The government is of the view that there is no need to discontinue the system of sahayaks which is prevalent in the Army," the report said.
