Anyone else think the Lavi looks much sleeker than the J-10. I always thought the J-10 looks too lumpy and awkward.

  7. I agree with you. The Lavi is far sleeker. The J-10 reflects Chinese and Russian conservatism with regard to design.

    conservatism with regard to design.
I doubt that 'design' is in even in their vocabulary

No seriously, the new generations of Sukhois coming out are quite aesthetically pleasing and not to mention the Mig 29 (the one nice looking fighter from Mig Mapo)

What a F-16 ripoff, since Israelis cant do anything on their own, it is little wonder that they even ripped off the designs of their financier, same story with Kfir, nothing original. If you want to be in awe, just look at an f-16 or an f-16XL, far more sleeker and more importantly original designs...

Lavi essentially seems to be an f-16 updated with late-80s early 90s aerodynamic advances, namely changing the layout to delta-wing with canards. I would imagine it would be more manouverable than an f-16.

I've seen pictures of the f-16XL and i have to say, the Lavi looks much sleeker. The XL looks like some sort of vulture, a hideous stretch of the classic f-16 shape, while the Lavi just looks like a updated version of the f-16 while keeping the classic lines.

  11. It is more manouverable than the F-16. Israeli F-16 pilots who flew the Lavi or saw it fly commented that it would leave the F-16 in the dust. Too bad for the Israeli's, the US forced the program to shut down.

The US administration saw the Lavi becoming a competitor in the internation markets against the F16.. hence canned it.. One of the few and rare correct decisions that American goverment has made against Israel!!

One thing I dont get is why didnt the Chinese just purchase the LAVI design and prototypes and put that into mass prodn instead of coming up with the J10??? It would have been a lot simpler and cheaper to do so and in the end they would have had a world class proven fighter. Kind of like buying the design rights for the Mig 33 and coming up with the FC1/S7......

Thats probably because of the fact that since americans were funding the whole project, just as they fund everything Israeli venture and facet of Israeli life, they did not want a transfer of technology to China, so the whole deal between China and Israel was of clandestine nature and there was an effort to hide the link between Lavi and China. The practical thing for China to have done was to cosmetically change the design a bit and remove signs of a Lavi pedigree. This, though superficial was more then enough for Israel's lap dog US to keep domestic criticism to the minimum.
