Everyone, I wanted to start a thread which deals with the ramifications of the Floods in Pakistan. Only difference is that I want to focus on the Positive, not sure if there are any...but just thought I would try to see if there is anything good that might come out of this catastrophe. Also, this is an opportunity to 'rewire' or 'reboot' Pakistan...Any suggestions as to how or what can be done differently now...

I was thinking and I could come up with a couple.

1) Nothing brings a country together like disaster. I have seen people uniting and getting together, from all walks of life to try to help out the displaced

2) The mass migration that has taken place is actually helping to breakdown the ethnic barriers.

3) The Floods has helped to restore the image of the Army...even those who were fighting the Army ended up being grateful to them for their help

4) This is a perfect opportunity to institute land reforms.

5) The ruling elite is beholden to a few outside forces such as IMF and Worldbank, hence they can force reforms in a number of sectors, including Corporate governance.

We have threads on Pak-USA and Pak-China relations. But recent news suggests that there may be movement in closer relations between Pakistan and Russia. I do not know if relations with russia bode well for Pakistan but I may report what is being discussed.

Russians still have the old dreams of having access to a deep water port on the Arabian sea. Also Russia wants to be included in the settlement of Afghanistan problem and is very worried and wish to counter US influence in Islamabad.

During the recent Sochi summit betqween Russian, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, news is that Russia wants to do the following:

1. Acquire access to deep water ports in Pakistan which will help Russia tremendously with economic gains;

2. It may also eventually help Russia with a military foothold in future;

3. A joint project Central Asia-South Asia (CASA) 1,000 MW energy line to provide electricity from Tajikistan to Pakistan;

4. A proposed 1,340-kilometer rail system which connects Pakistan's Chitral region via the Durrah Pass into Afghanistan and with Dushanbe;

5. An extensive road link linking Islamabad to Farghana Valley. Russia thinks that this will allow Russian use of warm water ports and Islamabad an access to Central Asian Republics.

Now what the political, economic, and military dimensions it may entail and how much Pakistan will benefit from the discussed, is for the experts to gauge. China does not seem to figure in the arrangement but it may have a separate sets of projects which may help Pakistan.

Indians are said to be quite unhappy with the turn of events but Pakistan may to have to reconsile and balance its relations between China, Russia, and its off again-on again frienship with USA. I am not sure how it plays out but Pakistan's strategic importance is
once again confirmed by all these events. May Allah help Pakistan to make the right decisions which in the end help it.

I hope that the Moderators will allow us to keep this thread for a while - even though it is (by my own admission) biased in favour of one party.

Many members of the forum are silent supporters of President Musharraf, I know this through personal interactions with many of you and I appeal to you to join our party.

Everybody knows that I am a diehard supporter of President Musharraf and I do not repeat my reasons for being so.

Recently the "All Pakistan Muslim League" has been registered in Pakistan as a nationwide political party by Barrister Saif and Major General (R) Rashid Qureshi. The formation of the party is a follow on from the Pasder-e-Pakistan campaign.

The objective of the party is simple - to follow the principles of Quaid e Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah for the governance of Pakistan.

APML is intended to be a genuinely democratic party which is ready to govern Pakistan. President Musharraf will be the initial leader of the party (as the party is currently entirely made up of Musharraf supporters), however President Musharraf will have to face an election to become full time Chairman, as will all party office holders. The party will not be the domain of the Musharraf family.

All workers of APML are working for the betterment of Pakistan and not to increase the size of their bank balances. We personally have nothing to gain from supporting President Musharraf other than a belief that Pakistan can prosper again under his leadership.

Our objective is to win the next general election in Pakistan and govern through coalition with the MQM and an alliance of other PMLs (talks are ongoing for the formation of a united Muslim League sans PML-N. Pir Pragaro is already with us)Some may think that we are living in dreamland, however let us make some points clear -

1. In the 2008 General Election President Musharraf had by that time been in power for 9 years (it is generally accepted that apathy towards any government sets in after 8
years); After just 2 years out of office the country's problems have multiplied.

2. In the 2008 General Election there was widespread sympathy for the PPP - next time they will be booted out of power by the electorate in such brutal fashion that the continued viability of their party as a cohesive organisation may be in jeapordy.

3. In 2008 President Musharraf was still facing the lawyers movement.

4. In 2008 although President Musharraf had shed his uniform he was still perceived and maligned in the media as a dictator.

Despite these factors PML-Q was still the second largest party in terms of votes (due to Pakistan's first past the post electoral system this was not reflected in the their number of seats). These votes can be seen as a vote for President Musharraf at the time.

As mentioned above, an outright majority of a united PML is difficult but we have a chance of governing through coalition.

President Musharraf's woefully misinformed enemies will use issues such as Lal Masjid, Personal corruption (absolute nonsense) and steel mills as sticks to attack President Musharraf with. If anyone needs further information to counter these lies then they are welcome to PM me.

Pakistan is falling so behind India that soon we will seem like North Korea with only the nuclear available to protect our position - not something a civilised nation should be doing.

If we do not act now we all know that history will simply repeat itself - PPP will be out at the next election and PML-N will come in to take their turn - then they will either be removed democratically or undemocratically resulting in the same old cycle.

Only APML can break the mould. If you would like to join you can do so by facebook (formal web-sites are a few weeks away) or you can PM me.

Aziz
